Apprenticeships

There is no better way to experience the work of Marin Organic in the office or in the field than to work alongside us through our apprenticeship programs.

Marin Organic offers various apprenticeship opportunities according to our programs and availability. The two basic categories of apprenticeships are either with the Marin Organic Programs or with a Marin Organic Farm. Please see below for descriptions.

Internship Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships

We have a rolling admission for our program apprenticeships. We are looking for dedicated and motivated individuals who are positive and proactive. Applicants should be computer savvy, responsible, professional, and friendly. Apprenticeships with Marin Organic Programs are unpaid. We require a minimum commitment of one full day in the office per week over three months and a maximum commitment of 40 hours per week over six months. The terms are flexible in order to ensure that apprentices are able to meet their financial needs.

To apply, please send a cover letter and resume to info@marinorganic.org.

In your cover letter please specify which program you are most interested in learning about and why it is a particular point of interest.

  • Executive and Development – tasks would vary greatly and include research for innovative programs, attending special events, and getting to know the community of Marin Organic - farmers, ranchers, donors, press, and local representatives. This is a rare opportunity to work closely with the leaders of our organization and to be a part of the next steps we face in shaping the local and organic movement.

  • Organic School Lunch & Gleaning Program – please visit our Organic School Lunch Program webpage for more information. Tasks in this department may include co-facilitating the MO Glean Team, photographing and interviewing students on farms, co-teaching MO Farm Days for kids, researching and revising curriculum, working with school chefs, and creating signage for cafeterias. This program, as with any of our programs, is only limited by your imagination of what's possible.

  • Producer Member Services – this department entails getting to know all of our Marin Organic farms and farmers, reaching out when necessary, responding to their needs & requests, and facilitating community amongst our membership. Varied tasks would include visiting farms, creating on farm events, developing programs with partner organizations, connecting people and resources to farms and amongst farms, and updating farm profiles and photographs. Prior farming experience is helpful but not required when applying for this position.

  • Special Event & Supporting Business Program – specific duties may involve creating signage and advertising for events, visiting and promoting Supporting Businesses, facilitating communication between restaurants and farms and vice verse, menu and event planning and execution, and creatively expanding the program. Please visit our Supporting Business webpage for more information on this program.

  • General – the goal of a General Support apprenticeship is to learn how the daily operations of Marin Organic are carried through, learning about the priorities of a small non-profit, as well as the details of Marin Organic’s mission and vision. Tasks may include updating our press book, setting up signage and promotional materials at events and Supporting Business locations, research on specific programs, training with each department, assisting with our events, and visiting farms.

Depending upon the candidate and time availability, each applicant may be asked to complete an “in scope” project that contributes to one of Marin Organic’s programs.

Apprenticeships

Opportunities to apprentice on Marin Organic Farms vary greatly. The type of farm, size of farm, and season dictate the structure of each apprenticeship. As such, Marin Organic has carefully outlined apprenticeship opportunities on each Producer Member profile. Please carefully read the “Work on the Farm” sections as well as the farm descriptions to find a fit to your interests and needs. To name a few of the variables you will find: some farms offer stipends, some offer housing, and some offer flexible hours.

If you are simply interested in spending time on a farm, please consider Gleaning food with us or attending a Farm Tour.

To apply, please contact the farm directly. Sending an email with a follow-up phone call is always a good option. Farmers are typically outside on their farms most of the time, please keep that in mind and apply early in the growing season to be sure you have had ample time to be in communication.
