Letter from Marin Organic Board President,
Janet Brown

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Marin Organic newsletter -- a seasonal journal that follows field-to-table production within the nourishing, diverse, and ever-changing food landscape of Marin County.

In future issues, we will be joining with Marin farmers, ranchers, artisan food producers, and food lovers, to bring you a regular, direct, and real-time experience of, and connection to, all aspects of farming, food production and preparation, and emerging issues and questions affecting our local food system.

We believe that these connections will lead to engagement of a broader cross-section of our local food web, and a deepening of the Marin County conversation around our common vision of a food system that is ecologically sound, socially integrated, and economically secure.

As part of its mission to "encourage a preference for locally grown food," Marin Organic is pleased and excited to take this next step in setting the table and building the vision.

To your health,

Janet Brown
President, Marin Organic Board of Directors
Owner, Allstar Organics

Organic School Lunch and Gleaning Program Breaks 100,000 lbs.!!!

Marin Organic and more than 12,000 schoolchildren are celebrating a record-breaking achievement! Since the inception of the Organic School Lunch and Gleaning Program in 2004, over 100,000 lbs. of donated certified organic food from local farms has been delivered by Marin Organic to public and private schools, resource centers, food banks and elder care facilities! That's 100,000 pounds of organic potatoes, squash, kale, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, zucchini, lemons, meat, eggs, Straus yogurt and even Straus chocolate milk! By supplementing orders with gleaned products, this program enables 12,000 students to choose nutritious, local food options every week, and schools to stay within their tight budgets. And that's not all, through Marin Organic's  Farm Days hundreds of students get hands-on experience and instruction on local farms and help with harvesting for the Organic School Lunch and Gleaning Program, empowering them to take action on their own campuses by creating grassroots CSA's, composting sites and school gardens. Oh, and did we mention our truck runs on 100% biodiesel? Now that's eating green!

News from Marin Organic Producer Members
 Don w/Lamb resized
In February, Marin Organic hosted its first 2009 Farm Tour at RedHill Farms. Despite pouring rain and knee-deep mud, children and adults alike braved the elements to enjoy hot tea, cuddly lambs and "farmtales" in the comfort of Don Gilardi's barn. Don produces organic cotton wool comforters and now has lamb available through Spring. Need culinary inspiration? Talk to Chef Joseph Humphrey at Cavallo Point - with the help of his RedHill lamb dish, Murray Circle was awarded a Michelin Star last year!

Lettuce, tomatoes and beets, oh my! Wild Blue Farm abounds with color, variety and flavors of all kinds. Much to our delight, Margie and Jack are forever-diversifying their portfolio, even offering cut flowers and edible bouquets for your epicurean pleasure. Interested in experiencing farm life first-hand?  Wild Blue Farm as well as other Marin Organic producer members offer apprenticeships starting in mid-April. Visit the Marin Organic apprenticeship webpage for more information.

Three Twins Ice Cream
Good news for our city dwellers - Three Twins Ice Cream is opening a new spot in San Francisco's Fillmore District! The bad news? Funding is tough to find in the current economy. So what's an ice cream entrepreneur to do? Owner Neal Gottlieb is getting creative. He's selling gift certificates at discounted prices to help fund the project. Purchase $100 in incremental gift certificates and you'll receive $10 in free gift certificates. And that's not all! Three Twins will also give 10% of each $100 purchase back to Marin Organic... $10 in gift certificates for you and a $10 donation to Marin Organic for each $100 purchase! It's like having your ice cream and licking it too!!!  To purchase, just e-mail Neal at threetwins@gmail.com **If you'd like to see more of Neal, check out "Business With Passion" online now at: www.TV.ManyGoodIdeas.com

Thanks to a new lease, Jesse Kuhn of Marin Roots Farm is now planting 30-acres of row crops on Point Reyes-Petaluma Road, just north of the Cheese Factory. Despite a sign saying "Organic California Bananas Coming Soon," for now, Jesse plans to continue growing mostly specialty and leafy greens - and we'll go bananas for that!

We're going to clue you in on one of the best-kept secrets in Marin: Drake's Bay Family Farms has the ONLY Certified Organic beef in the whole county! And although the label Certified Grassfed no longer exists as of this year, their herd continues to munch strictly on organic pastures - take our word for it (and pass it on)!

Need advice on designing and caring for your own organic garden? Marin Organic farmer, Liz Daniels, owner of Cow Track Ranch, now consults backyard gardeners on growing organically. With her expert advice and Cow Track's veggie starts, all you need is some dirt!

If you enjoy red meat but have to watch your intake, consider this: goat meat is high in protein and iron, low in fat and cholesterol. Just ask the experts, brother and sister team Mark Pomi and Kim Naugle at Big Oak Farm. Their family has been in the dairy business for three generations and in 2007 expanded their beef operation to include Boer, Kiko and Spanish goats. Order via their website, phone, & email, or look for Big Oak products at Marin Meats on Chestnut Street in San Francisco.

There's truth to the saying, "it looks good enough to eat," if you buy flowers from Local Flora in San Anselmo. Silke Vom Bauer's edible bouquets feature organic beets from Fresh Run Farm in Bolinas as well as other leafy greens from Marin Organic producers.

Bursting with lush heirloom fruits, healing herbs, and beautiful forests of food, the Regenerative Design Institute at Commonweal Gardens stands as testimony to the wonders of Permaculture design techniques. Penny Livingston and James Stark have been teaching the principles of Permaculture design for more than 15 years, drawing in students from around the world. Visit their website for class listings and satiate the Permaculture designer in you!
